Home Business Myths

Some common myths persist about starting your own business. Here are the ones heard most often.

Myth: You must highly educated to succeed at your own business.

Reality: There are plenty of successful people that do not have a university or college education! Education is not will make you successful; proper planning, hard work, willingness to learn, dedication, and other factors will determine your success.

Myth: A great product idea is all you need to create a successful home based business.

Reality: Successful businesses tend to have great products ... but they also have:

  • Great products that people want, offered at a price people are willing to pay.

  • The ability to produce that product at a cost that still allows them to turn a profit.

  • Great marketing and advertising. No matter how wonderful a product is, it won't make money unless people know about it.

It isn't enough to have a great product idea. You also have to have the research and the resources to back it up.

Myth: Your home based business will free up a great deal of leisure time for you and your family.

Reality: Not exactly. It will allow you to work around your personal life, but you will likely be working at least as much or more than you would for another company. The advantage is that you have the flexibility to work whenever you like.

Myth: Your home based business will let you mix your business and family life more readily.

Reality: Your business and personal lives should still be kept separate. They are two different things entirely. You need to be able to concentrate on growing your business and making some money (after all, you will need to support yourself and your family). Likewise, you need time to relax with your family and friends without interference from your business.

Myth: You don't necessarily need any specific business knowledge; you can hire others to do everything you don't know how to do.

Reality: It's always best to know a little bit about every aspect of your business. That way you'll be able to spot trouble signs, and understand more completely how well your business is doing and why.

Myth: You can do everything yourself.

Reality: You should have some knowledge of every aspect of your home based business ... but you don't need to be an expert on all of it. Get professional advice on what you don't understand.

Myth: Money is the only measure of success.

Reality: Your business profits are only one measure of success. Whether or not you have reached your personal goals is what will determine your success - that can be spending more time with the family, decreasing stress in your life by leaving the corporate workforce, a sense of independence, or any other goal.
