Home Based Business:
Other Considerations

It is important that you research the applicable regulations before you start your home based business. There are a fair number of details to take care of, but the more time you spend in preparation the less likely it is that you're going to run into a big problem that needs immediate attention.

Don't be afraid to ask for help. If you know friends or family that have started their own home businesses, ask if they'll sit down with you and run over the logistical details that need to get done. Rules and regulations vary according to where you live.

Of course, you can also look through your phone book to find city or state departments. If you cannot find what you think is an appropriate listing, just call the general inquiries line and ask for help.

A few things to consider include:

  • Registering your business. This involves selecting a business name. You will likely need to pay a registration fee as well.

  • Permit for working out of your home. Check with your local authorities to find out whether you need a permit for running your home based business. Keep in mind that some areas may have zoning restrictions that will not allow you to operate a home based business.

  • Business license. Some areas may require that you also purchase a business license if your business meets certain conditions. Once again, check with the local authorities for more information.

  • Product restrictions and regulations. It is illegal to produce certain types of products from your home. Likewise, the production of other products may be subject to certain regulations. Check with your local authorities for details.

  • Business financing. Do you have enough money to cover startup costs plus ongoing business expenses? If not, have you researched securing a business loan or other financing options?

  • Business addresses and phone numbers. How will you handle the collection of business correspondance or phone inquiries?
