Starting a Home Business: Meeting the Challenge Head-On!

"I'm tired," I groaned, flopping onto a couch. "I'll work on my business tomorrow... one day doesn't matter anyways."

Sound familiar? All across the world, would-be entrepreneurs are dreaming of building a home business of their very own. And all across the world, procrastinators are making excuses to avoid the unpleasantly hard task of just getting started.

I know. I was one of them. My excuses just kept getting more and more creative over time... until one day I reluctantly faced the facts: it was time to meet the challenge head-on. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

1. Take It One Step at a Time.

Big things are made up of little things. Don't try and tackle something huge; break it up into smaller tasks and do each of them separately. The 'big stuff' will eventually get done if you complete all the small stuff.

2. Don't Let Negativity Get the Better of You.

Most of us feel discouraged or depressed during the startup phase of business, when we're struggling to learn all sorts of things and trying to make sales. There's no doubt that it's hard work -- but the rewards can be great if you can push through the 'tough times'.

Someone once said, "Life's real failure is when you do not realize how close you were to success when you gave up."

3. Set Clear Goals.

Set clear, challenging but achievable goals, both for the short-term and for the long-term. You can't reach your destination unless you know where you want to go!

4. Know Your Motivations.

Keep in mind WHY you want to start a home business in the first place and use that as your motivation. Maybe you want to feel like you contribute financially to the household. Perhaps you want the sense of independence and achievement that comes with building a successful business from the ground up. Perhaps you're looking for 'just enough income', but more free time. Or it could be that you simply want to do what you love.

Whatever it is that you ultimately want, keep it fixed firmly in mind. It will give you that extra 'push' you may need when times get tough.

5. Don't Let Non-Productive Tasks Eat Up Your Time.

It's too easy to get caught up doing 'busy work'. Learn how to prioritize your valuable time -- important tasks that will ultimately benefit your bottom line should be done first (marketing, customer service, etc). Fit your administrative and clerical tasks in between.

For example, I often mail brochures to potential customers. Whenever I start one of these marketing campaigns I fold brochures and stuff envelopes while I watch TV. 'TV time' is normally nonproductive anyways, and doing my 'busy work' in front of the TV means I don't cut into valuable 'business' time.

6. Make a Firm Commitment.

Let's face it: no one ever has 'free time' these days... you have to MAKE the time for things that are important to you! Sometimes it involves sacrifices -- you might have to give up an hour or two of TV after work... or perhaps spend a few hours during the weekend working on the business.

7. Take Action!

While research, planning and preparation are all very necessary, it's possible to fall into the 'paralysis by analysis' trap -- that is, you get so caught up in trying to figure things out that you never actually *do* anything! Take action. It's the only way to get where you want to go!
